When i buy crickets they always place a piece of egg crate in the bag…why is that

Crickets breathe through their legs and if they com into too much contact with the plastic bag, they can suffocate. Also, and more importantly, placing many crickets together in a small space will have a higher instance of them trampling each other to death. The crate provides more surface area to avoid that scenario.
