What should I know about taking care of a Yorkie dog?

I’m taking care of my friends Yorkie. What should I know about the dog before I have it for four days?

I would make sure to get enough food from your friend (or be willing to purchase the same brand/type) that is fed to the dog. You don’t want to change a dogs diet without implementing the new food in phases first. So, make sure to get the same food that your friend is feeding the dog right now.

To prepare yourself mentally…some Yorkies (not all though) are very vocal dogs. They like to yip, but they’re typically very friendly.

Depending on how socialized your friend’s dog is, it might be very nervous around you/your family and nervous about being in a new environment. Try not to overwhelm the dog if it seems scared. The best thing you can do is sit down on the ground, act very calm and friendly (a high pitched tone could help), and let the dog approach you.

If the Yorkie has a favorite toy, be sure to get that when your friend drops the dog off. It could help relax the dog to have something it associates with fun and something that’s familiar in what will be an unfamiliar environment.

It’s always a good idea to get a leash and collar and to make time to take the dog for a walk. It will help the dog burn off any nervous energy and help it become more familiar with you.

Don’t feed it human food or table scraps.

Ask your friend if the dog is housetrained and if it is will it go to the door? will it jump around your feet and bark? You need to know what indicators to watch for if your friend’s dog is housetrained. If it is not housetrained, be sure to take the little dog out frequently.

If your friend leaves the hair long on the dog (which is the breed standard) it would be a really nice thing for you to brush the dog out daily. This will help prevent mats and keep the dogs coat and skin healthy. Plus, some dogs just love to be brushed. So, if it is a long-haired Yorkie ask your friend for a comb. If they don’t have one, any steel-toothed comb will do. Just remember to be gentle.

Yorkies a really sweet and fun dogs, but sometimes they are easily overwhelmed and can become quite timid. Don’t be nervous, just use common sense and loving judgment and you should be fine.

    Hope this helps.

it depends on the dog’s behavior. My yorkie is calm when im around. And he is very attached to me. So everytime Iive my house he howls and barks for like 30 mins.

make sure you do everything you friend tells you. And if he’s super hyper and not fully trained, make sure your very careful when opening your living room door
