what is the lowest amount of money you could spend a year on your dog for it to live happily and stay healthy?

i want to get a dog that already has its shots and is neutered or spayed and stuff and doesnt have any problems. how much would it cost for all the supplies and food for the first year i have the dog? im not going to buy any expensive food or supplies, only
the cheapest, but not so cheap that the food cause cancer. so give me the bare minimum it would cost for me to take care of this dog every year.

Honestly I can spend about $1,500 a year for a dog.. more when I think they need toys or go to the vet for unplanned for things..

    Mom to 3 dogs

  3. Rayven Wolf says:

1000-2000 including vet bills, factoring in inflation of food prices because of rising fuel costs, new toys, flea and tick treatments, treats etc.

though add in another 2000 for emergency vet bills. if you are lucky.

No dog stay problem free forever.

I’m sorry, but you are *most definately* not fit to have a dog.

Dogs are like children, and need the best lives possible. If you cannot afford or are not willing to give them let alone the best FOOD, then you cannot and should not have a dog.

What if your dog gets hit by a car? You and I cannot predict the future. What will you do then? Vet bills can sky rocket to over $2000.

The first year, if you are buying all the supplies, but no vet visits, then ~$500. After that, just for food – well it depends on the size of the dog! But you can expect to spend $20 -$60 a month on food. And your annual vet visit and inoculations will run ~100 per year – but that is without ANY emergencies!!

Possibly £1500. But if I gotta pay it, I will. (Including vet)
Just on toys food etc.. I’m guessing £700 but I really don;t know.

We own two dogs one big one smallish we feed them a 50lb. bag of dog food ( it is also fed to the cats) at $12.00 and it lasts 2-3 months. We only take them to the vet everycouple of years for rabies shots. So it probably costs about a $100 for you probably less. You probably have to get a tag and lisence though so add $10-$20 (just a guess).

first of all….what do you mean "cheap food".

anything you buy at a grocery store is NASTY! a good quality food will cost you anywhere from 20-40 bucks a month depending on the size of your dog.
i spend well over $80 a month on dog food for my 4 dogs…that’s over $40 for a 35 lb bag. we feed Solid Gold though..a top of the line quality food. there are "cheaper" quality foods, but you wont get them for less than 20 bucks for a 30-40lb bag i can tell you that much

take into consideration that your dog WILL have annual and bi-annual shots (they dont get one set of shots for life…it’s a continuous thing). probably about $200.00 a yr for that per dog.

supplies- toys, beds, leash, new collars once a year cause they get worn, new tags once a year cause they get worn, extras such as grooming if your dog is of the low-shedding type (such as a poodle, Bichon Frise, etc.) shampoo, flea and tick prevention, heart worm prevention, shed brushes, towels just for the dog so you dont get yours nasty, dog dishes, and all the "extras" that might pop up like medication for ear infections (that happens frequently in some breeds). or other unexpected things when you dog becomes injured or sick…

WOW i can’t give you total but it’s probably around $500-$1000 a year for ME personally PER DOG. and i have 4.

    Xs 4 that’s around $4000.00 a year.
and this doesn’t include obdience training, boarding, pet sitters, gas to and from the park, boarding kennels, vets, pet store..etc.

so add all that up, food, vet bills, shots, supplies, extras, etc. i probably spend anywhere from $10,000 to $15,000 per yr on my dogs!

and i dont by the "cheap stuff" cause "Cheap" equals poorly made crap.

i dont by "cheap" stuff for my children….why would i do that for my dogs? they are just as part of my family as my kids and they deserve the BEST.

if you are that worried about cost, i would recommend another animal as a pet for now. a dog is a LIFE TIME commentment. it wont always be cheap.
eventually your pet will be older and things like medication will be more frequent or treatment for things that they suffer in old age.
just because you get a dog w/no problems now doesn’t mean that they cannot develop them later. you need to be prepared for that. if that is something you cannot handle…please think again about a pet.

for more info read this article…it breaks down estimated cost, and is very interesting to read:

What if he has an accident or eats something that causes a blockage, breaks a leg, gets a urinary track infection ask a Vet what it would cost if all of those things happened, 2 of my dogs got sick in 3 yr, not counting little thing’s like diarrhea, stomach upsets, stitches there is also the hearworm tabs they have to take 1x a mo interceptor is the best takes care of most other worms and some parasites if you do skip the heartworm that is a disease that will kill your dog, back to my 2 dogs hosp stay, meds, and aftercare not included $15,000.00 give a couple thousand more, I forget the exact amt. Well can you afford a dog????
