what is a good breed of dog for a family who does day care?

My family used to have a yellow lab, but she passed away recently. My mother does day care, and our last dog was great with the children. What other dogs might be a good choice for this situation? My dad’s birthday is coming up and I wanted to get him a dog.

I’m sorry that happened she must have been a great dog. well i would suggest golden retrievers, or possibly a mixed breed. they might be mutts but some are very well tempered like my old dog bailey he was german shepard and rottwieller I think.

well I have a dog that is about to have half cat half dog babies! it will definatly keep the day care children entertained!

  3. Dark Syder says:

Brittney Spaniel. Very great family dog. Not a whole lot of barking, but is a protector and bird dog. Females are very maternal with small children. A loving, but not threatening mother.

A golden retriever or a lab are the most faithful.

any breed mixed with border collie, terrific with kids! Terrier Poodles, (also known as bischon), labs, GL

I have a beagle that is sweet around everybody, including children. But they have there drawbacks also like they like to dig and chew. You have to have plenty of chew toys and train him not to dig.

get anything except 4 a chiuaua. y i say that is that
    1. i cant spell it
    2. the kids culd step on it
    3. wen they bite it hurts like crap
    4. if sum1s asleep and sum1 else is cummin into the house, the sum1 who is asleep will wake up and want 2 kill the dog.

A pug! They are great with kids, adults, other house pets, anyone. They are the nicest dogs around. I have one and he is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO friendly.

  9. brittany1509 says:

golden retrievers. i have one and she is really nice to kids cause i have a little girl i baby sit who is 1 and the dog loves her. golden retrievers also love playing so if there are toddlers they would be very entertained because the dog would play with them.

well there are many breeds that are good with children but it depends of what size of dog you are looking for a big size is an old english sheep dog and a small size could be a cocker spaniel but it also depends on how you train the dog…

  12. his_disciple777 says:

probably a obiedient dog like a lab or a golden retriever. If you keep it like outside your probably want a playfull small dog like a shitzu.so shitzu is probably your best bet

  13. askanexpert says:

you did not say how old the daycare children are— get a small pet if it is around babies- toddlers. Get a medium size dog if it is around bigger children— they can be too rough for a small dog and hurt it. poodles are good for a small dog– try a beagle or boxer for medium size dog- if you want a large dog — Labrador and Golden Retrievers are great w/children, they just have alot of energy- jump on you sometimes… and steal the kids’ toys to play with–(key word- retriever!) need lots of attention.

if u’ve been watching those family shows u’ll see that most of them hav golden retrivers except 4 beethoven

i would have to say the trusty German Shepard is a great dog for people with a daycare center they make great dogs and they have great personalities

Im partial to minature schnauzers. We have two a female and a male. We dont breed them both are pets. Had them both about 2 years, We had our daughter a year ago and both dogs just love her. I also ahve a younger sister, shes 5 the dogs are good with her also. Now the minature schnauzer is a small dag, a big difference from a lab. We had a lab also but our fence was too low and he kept getting out till one day we lost him. The schnauzers are now our favorite.

  18. Taoman says:

Labs are perfect for that but assuming you don’t want to get them the same kind of dog which will only remind them of the departed pup…
I would go with ….An Old English Sheepdog! Kids love all that fur, and they are the most gentle dogs in the world!
And as an added plus… they are herding dogs and so will protect…and even round up… the daycare kids.

  19. JRW says:

A dog like a Cocker spaniel or a beagle are small enough that they will not hurt the kids playing with them and they usually get along great with kids.

To the one that said they are going to have half cat/half dog babues! IMPOSSIBLE!

  20. queeniyla says:

any dog , try a lab or a gfolde retreiver, their really calm dogs and they souln’t be any touble. But make sure you don’t get a small dog. I have a toy poodle, and a kid stepped on her paw and broke it. 5 000$ and 3 months later, she was back to normal. Kids don’t understand that they might hurt the dog, so I reconmend that you go with a big and calm dog.

  21. moe says:

labs i believe are the very best family dog they are loyal and very good with children why dont you get another lab black or yellow it doesnt matter and it doesnt matter if it is male or female either.

  22. tlctreecare says:

First never give a dog as a present for someone. ever it is a really bad idea. Really bad.
Second if your Mom does day care there should not be a dog allowed anywhere near children in day care.
They could get hurt or the dog could get hurt and bite a child. I would never leave a child in day care where they were exposed to someones dog.
I am a dog trainer and I would never expose a dog to a bunch of kids that were in day care you never know waht they will do to a dog.
    Bad situation very bad.
This is a accident waiting to happen. The liability is a nightmare.
    No dogs with day care.

  23. petlover says:

Maybe a corgi? Great with children and they are lovable family dogs and don’t get into mischief when left alone. They are low maintenance. Approx. 30 mins exercise per day is enough.PETLOVER

  24. Frost says:

first of all…don’t you think the parents of the children should be aware that you want to bring a dog into their environment???
there are laws about animals being around children in day cares/schools etc.
you might want to check your laws first.
i can understand you wanting a new pet..but its your parents job to protect those children first! I’m not saying that dogs are bad around children..i have 3 kids, and 4 dogs myself.
would i want my kids to be around a dog i don’t know at a daycare center…now matter how well behaved the dog is? No. why? because I’m not there to maintain supervision over my child. and i wouldn’t feel comfortable doing that. at home, i monitor my children around my pets.
how do i know the dog wont accidentally get his ears pulled by some toddler and the dog not bite out of fear, or pain??
even a nip can be harmful.

unless you are going to keep the dog away from the kids in your home, i would suggest holding off on a new pet..until you have gotten the okay from the parents of the children in your home.
and then…rescue a pet from a local SPCA, or humane society.
those places take the time to check the dogs temperament.
or try a rescue group for a specific breed if you want. they would know what dog would be better suited to your situation.

  25. lyndsay4498 says:

Any dog can be a terrific family pet, it is all in how you bring them up.
Too much teasing and "tug-of-war" will cause the dog to be more aggressive.
A good deal of training goes a long way.

  26. tonya_momma says:

Always a good idea to adopt from the shelter, but if you’d prefer a "breed" I like English Setters. Very smart,(bird dog) loving, nice.Kids love the "freckles". Large enough to not get lost in the couch. Our E.S. Bugsy doesn’t even mind getting poked in the eyes by our 2 year old! Ears get pulled, he’s a trooper. Pretty dogs, but not so fru-fru that a man would be embarrassed to walk it (poodle). Fast learners and eager to please.
