In addition to the ones you are considering you might like a Bernese Mountain Dog. All the same chracteristics and very fluffy! And it doesn’t get so hot where you are that it would be uncomfortable.
You might also consider a young adult, rather than a young pup. You have a very busy household and elderly people living with you. You can bypass a lot of the puppy energy (and potential mishaps of a large dog knocking over a child or old person accidentally) and training needs with a 1-2 year old adult. Breeders will sometimes have rehomes or a dog they were reserving for possible showing who didn’t work out in the ring, and rescues for the breed will have lots of young adults. These dogs will be mostly trained, completely housebroken and have very solid temperament evaluations, unlike many shelter dogs. You’d also know how they are with other dogs and pets. It’s still adopting, but with a much more solid idea of the dog if it’s from a breed rescue or a breeder rehome.
A choclate lab or any lab. A rottwelier can be tained to be nice they drool a lot though. My dads friend has a rottwelier he is so cute. You have to train it. I have a choclate lab, the only thing is they shed and when you dont have the dog anymore you will always want a lab after you had one.
get a black lab they are the best!!
I have three dogs, and we rescued all of them at different shelters, the best kind of dog breed you can get is a mut. They always tend to be the cutest and there are so many different kinds of them you can pretty much find any trait you are looking for
golden retriever mix. they are in shelters everywhere. they are the most loyal sweet dog ever.
I think you should get a Great Pyrenees.
Sounds like you want either a husky or german sheppard. None of the dogs you listed are good "watch dogs".
I think a German Shepherd would be a nice choice as long as it is trained well.
Husky / malamute
Based on what you want in a dog, I would go with a mastiff. I prefer Bull Mastiffs, basically because I know more about them then most of the other mastiffs. I also like Neopolitans although they can be a bit expensive and can be prone to skin issues. As far as having a long and fluffy coat, a Tibetan mastiff does have that quality, but I don’t know very much about their temperament.
As far as the dog doing okay with other males, that has little to nothing to do with the breed. That depends entirely on the amount of socialization he has with other males, and the amount of training in general you put into it. Breed has nothing to do with whether or not he’ll get along with other males, that all depends on you (or his previous owners if you’re able to adopt).
Personally though, sounds like a mastiff meets all of your expectations, aside from the long and fluffy coat part. Newfies have the long and fluffy coat, but I don’t know how they are with strangers, what their guarding instincts are, etc… If I remember correctly, they weren’t bred for guarding or protection, so I wouldn’t think they would meet your expectations there. Someone that knows more about Newfies then I do would have to answer that one!
golden retriever would be perfect
I LOVE Newfoundlands. They are GREAT with kids, the elderly, and other pets. They are also very protective of their family (when need be), but they are great with strangers as well.
I have been told that they are a bit slow when it comes to training. NOT TRUE AT ALL! My Newfie learned all his tricks in the matter of a day or two. It just depends on how much time you are willing to put into training.
It sounds like you have the perfect environment for a Newfie, but I’m sure any dog will have a great home no matter what breed you choose.
Hello!
Even though you said long haired, I would still suggest a dane. They are literally the calmest dogs I have ever met! The one that I know very well is really intellegent and great with people of all ages. He is also amazing with other animals! If you are really interested in a long haired dog I would suggest a Kuvasz or a Great Pyranese. As they are good gaurd dogs, but also make amazing family pets! I would strongly suggest maybe checking out a shelter. As there are lots of large breed dogs in shelters that need a home.
Enjoy!
Golden Retriever
get a chocolate lab i breed them and i love them!! or u can get an american mastif u can go to dogbreedinfo.com and go to purebreds and look under L and A and find american mastif and labrador retreiver
I would suggest the Newfoundland, definitely! A beautiful, gentle giant with a gorgeous coat (which requires lots of brushings!) They are known for being intelligent and easy to train and being wonderful family dogs. From what I can tell, it would fit every category of what you want in a dog. Good luck to you in your quest for the perfect dog for your family
Although you said you’d like a long haired dog, I really would suggest a labrador. The fact that they are often trained to be used as assistance dogs shows that they are loyal, trainable, intelligent and affectionate.
Golden Retriever may be your dog, they are great family dogs, and don’t often get aggressive towards other dogs but will protect your family. They arnt as large as what you asked for, but they love snow and can handle the temperature range. I had a great golden through my childhood and through college, he lived to a ripe old age, and was possibly the best companion dog that I had (I got him when I was 12). Currently I have a black lab, who also covers your traits, but he is a LARGE dog, at only a year he is a whopping 85lbs, and while some labs can be bred for hunting and being agressive, he is not. He is calm, and lovable.
Try looking at petfinder.org, and trying to find something (since most dogs are mixes) that has either a lab or a golden in it. There are also lots of Golden Retriever rescues that will have facilities all over the state. I stalked them after I lost my golden, but eventually found something totally unexpected, a Lab.
Well, we have a labradoodle. SHe is veryy protective. WE hear her bark outside to us coming in. SHe is being trained verry well and learns quickly. Shes 7 mounths old about 40 punds. She lives our huge yard. More homie but if some1s out shes fine. SHe love to hug and give kisses. She is not aggresive. The cat..thing..well rs don’t get along, but the cat is a spoild bratt lol. But the dog is fine with her. SO i tihnk a labradodole or a goldendoodle. ame trait but breed by a golden retriver.
No mean comments here.
Watch dog: Almost any dog will alert you of strangers on your property. Even the small dogs.
Non-Aggressive: If the dog is ‘submissive’ there is no problem. Otherwise, socialization and training must be done.
Loyal: Almost ALL dogs are loyal to their people.
Trainable: All dogs are trainable. It is according to the owners how well trained it can be. Some breeds are easier to train than others.
Strong: Strong willed? Strong bodied? Larger breeds are of course usually stronger bodied.
Intelligent: Again, according to the breed or mix. Some are more intelligent than others.
Wary of strangers but not aggressive: When a dog is out of it’s normal environment and in ‘neutral territory’ it should NOT be wary of strangers.
Refer to watch dog. My Pit is extremely human friendly wherever we go. At home, she is wary of strangers.
Good with other pets: Have to be tested for that. Some dogs are cat friendly and some are not.
Fluffy or long coat: Beware of extreme shedding and overheating. Know that grooming is a must on a weekly basis at least.
Very affectionate: A well balanced dog who is not fearful will give you loads of affection.
Dependent: You want a dog that is dependent? I don’t know what you are saying there. My dogs are ‘dependent’ upon me to give them everything they need but are ‘independent’ also.
So, I suggest you take your list and start ‘shopping’. Rescue organizations with dogs in foster homes can often give you more information regarding your ‘list’.
Dogs in shelters come from various backgrounds but DON’T rule them out. People find the perfect dog in shelters.
I have a lab, she makes a horrible watch/guard dog, loves strangers, but is the best ever. You will never find a more loyal, lovable, smart dog in your life. She is my first and only dog, but she gets along w/ all of my friends dogs, big or small. I can take her on walks around the neighborhood, take her to the dog park, I can take her anywhere and have never worried about how she will behave around other humans or animals. I would never consider getting another breed of dog, she has made me a lab lifer, lol.
I myself have three dogs and i think a labrador would be best suited for you, as they are loyal and trainable and very intelligent, I know through experience that they are good watchdogs and get along very well with any other dog as long as its trained of course, also labradors are very affectionate and get along with kids great, i think its great that you have such a large garden, this will be great for the dog, so overall i think you will have no problem finding a labrador that is suited to your environment, good luck
A Golden Retriever would be perfect for you.
bernese mountain dogs are the best big dogs! they’re sweet, smart, easy to train, great with kids, and much more. they have long fur.

also, try http://www.petfinder.com if you want to adopt, or google bernese mountain dog rescues and you may find one there!
I would suggest a Leonberger:

Newfoundlands are also wonderful dogs, or Bernese Mountain Dogs.
Good luck!
Bernese Mountain Dog- love kids, love other pets, alert, friendly but protective, and very intelligent
Kuvasz- intelligent, protective of his family and wary of strangers and they thrive in colder weather, they do need to be well socialized as a pup and grow up with your children.
Leonberger

Maremma Sheepdog- intelligent, brave, makes an excellent guard dog, tolerates cold weather well, reserved with strangers, good with other dogs
Newfoundland

Tibetan Mastiff

I have a black standard poodle and he is very protective of our family
he is an excellent watch dog.
Don’t get a Golden Retriever or lab– I have both and they are SO FRIENDLY.
i luv them- but they wouldn’t fit your criteria.
-a dog that is a good watchdog/guard dog
* Any dog will protect the pack if raised correctly ….
-non agressive towards other male dogs (we would like a male)
* Again, if you raise your dog correctly, you should be the pack-leader without hitting or abusing your animal, you shouldn’t have a problem with dominance no matter the breed or gender.
-loyal
* All dogs are loyal to their respected pack-leader, you will have to work with this dog ….
-trainable
* All dogs are trainable.
-good with our other pets
* Again, as long as you don’t hit your dog and your pack-leader, you wont have a problem. Some dogs, though, such as retrievers and terriers, have a stronger prey-drive so you may need to work a little more with them.
- I think you should lean more to researching several different breeds. You could consider researching Saint Bernards, Newfoundlands, Leonbergers etc, etc.
