What are the most basic things I need to know about owning a cat and dog?

I will be getting a puppy and a kitten at the same time. I am not very experienced at raising pets, and I need to know basic training and the most important supplies to get (aside from food, of course).

Wow, you have got your hands full with that. Make sure you keep them separate, your kitten will be scared of the puppy and the puppy will just be excited. I recommend you give the kitten a room where the puppy is not allowed. Let the kitten stay in the room for about 2 days, by then it will know where all the hiding places are. Let the kitten come out on its own that way when it gets spooked it will run back into its room to a safe hiding area. I have had the best experiences with puppies and crate training. You just put the puppy in a crate over night (a crate only big enough for the puppy to lay down sit up and turn around). In the morning you take the puppy outside to go to the bathroom, if it goes poo and pee it gets to stay out of the crate for about 3 hours until it is time to go out again. If it doesn’t go it has to go back in the crate for 10-15 min, then take it back outside again, if it goes it gets to say out if not repeat until it goes. Alot of people say this is kinda harsh, but puppies will pee and poo all over if not trained, and some people spank them for having accidents, which is not ok. Your puppy will not understand if you spank it and will only become fearfull of you. Make sure you feed puppy and kitten food until they are 9 months old and then you can start to switch them to adult food. They both need vaccines starting at 6 weeks old until they are old enough for their rabies shot around 16 weeks old. You can also have them spayed/neutered at 6 months old. Your puppy will get in the litter box and in the kittens food unless you can out smart the puppy somehow, good luck.

You probably need to get books on each. Those pets are quite different. The fact that you’re raising them side by side will give you an opportunity to see them learn things from each other (sometimes).
