okay, i kind of want to have some pet mice, but what do i need? i have a 20 gallon fish tank that im not using, would i be able to use that as a cage, or no because theres no holes and stuff?
what are the supplies i need
what do i feed mice
how often do i need to clean the cage
are mice pets where you can take them out and play with them?
The fish tank is fine, as long as it is free of water and anything else that may have been their when it was used as an aquarium.
The basic stuff you need is:
1. Bedding. I myself use pine or cedar shavings, as they are excellent and cheap, but you can use the recycled paper bedding, too.
2. Mice need a wheel and hiding space(s). A basic and cheap hut will do, or you can even make your own from wood, but it has to be untreated. Any wheel is good. Wheels can go anywhere from 5-12 dollars and hiding spaces are 5-15 dollars depending on the size and brand.
3. A water dish or bottle. Bottles cost somewhere from 3-10 dollars, depending on the store, or you can just fill a tiny dish with water. Either one works great.
4. Food. Every animal has a food preferance. Like my mouse hates bananas but loves carrots, lettuce and spinach. It will depend on your mouse. Whatever you do, don’t give your mouse any meats or egg or milk or chocolate. Cheese is fine. Basic mouse food costs depending on the brand and the size of the bag. for a medium bag, with a basic brand costs anywhere from 7-14 dollars. Sometimes pets store sell hamster food and rat food but not mouse food. In this case buy the rat food. I talked with a professional breeder of mice and rats and he said that the food is good for both mice and rats.
5. At first, you mouse will be likely to run away from you or jump out of your hand. So if you want to play with her/him just play with him/her above their cage to avoid them running away.
6. You have to change food and water daily, and bedding has to be change once or twice a week.
7. Mice themselves cost anywhere from 2-14 dollars depending on the store.
8. Just as a precaution, do not bathe you mouse. It will shed his/her natural oils. If she gets really dirty, either buy her a box of dry bath powder(anywhere from 5-9 dollars) or take a cloth or rag make a piece of it damp, and gently wipe her/him down.
9. If you buy mice together in a store, that’s fine as long as they are in the same cage. If you buy them from different cages or stores, the will fight for territory and it won’t be good.
If you need anything else jut message me and I will help you.
Good luck!
The tank would be ok if it’s a 20 gallon long, meaning it’s longer instead of taller. It would be fine to use as long as you get a screen and locks for it so nothing can get out or in. A glass tank would be good to use because it cuts down on harmful drafts that can make your mouse sick. You should only have one mouse per cage/tank because as they grow older they will fight for territory and possibly kill each other. They have mouse food at any pet store. you should clean the cage/tank at least once a week to prevent the build up of urine which cane can them breathing problems. Mice can be pets to handle be it takes some time for them to get to know you so hold them over their tank in case they jump.
do not get a mice get a hamster or a rat
Ok I got mice a couple of weeks ago!
1. Use carefresh and never pine/cedar bedding it’s harmful for them I made that mistake now my mice are sneezing!
2. Get a better cage (crittertail), mice food found at pet stores, clean the cage every week and clean it very good!
3. Yes you can play with them get 2 mice at the same time so they already kind of know eachother!
4. Get 2 females they are very friendly animals so they need a friend. They dont bite unless they are hungry!
5. Please don’t listen to the other you will harm your mice.
6. Get them a ball to roll around in your room or wherever they like tubes so if you get a crittertail cage you can add tubes and decorate it how you like.
7. I love mice I have 6 and they all cuddle together.
8. and if you get crittertail cage it comes with a food bowl and waterbottle so you are all set.
The tank is fine as long as you dont have the top on and just letting you know it doesnt have much ventilation so it will smell worse than a wire cage. theres also more chances of the mice getting respiratory problems from the ammonia build up. so you should clean the tank 2-3 days a week.
you need a water bottle, food, maybe fruits/veges, bedding like carefresh, you need at least 2 mice, a mouse wheel, a hut where they can sleep in.
you feed mice food frm the pet store and i think you can feed them some fruits and veges, basically anything..
2-3 days a week
yes but they are a pet that is kinda for young people as the mice just do.. well hwat mice do. they dont actually play with you or interact with you they either sit there or try to run away. they are EXTREMELY cute though.
