Pet Parrot questions (cages, recommendations)?

Hey I’ve been thinking of obtaining a small pet bird for quite some time now. I am a student, but have many spares and only work a small amount. I have done a lot of research and am considering a cockatiel, lovebird, or a parrotlet. (leaning more in favor of the lovebird) I would like a large cage with minimal "throwing mess" and would also like to make it myself. I anybody can direct me to some stellar plans for building a birdcage like this I would appreciate it! (have looked at some things like the zinc coated mesh problems and such any info on this would be great too) Also, if you have any other suggestions, tips, etc I would love to hear them. Thanks a lot!!

I strongly urge you to forget about trying to build a safe cage. When using any kind of metal around birds, it can be fatal. They are especially at risk of metal poisoning from zinc and lead. Which is also why you don’t want to buy the cheapest cage you can find. You also have to be very careful about what kind of wood would be safe. Even if it’s totally safe, it’s going to get chewed. Financially speaking, it’s just not a good idea to try to build your own. My advice would be to start saving up money for a really nice cage and in the meantime, do lots more research on the different types of birds you are interested in having. Be sure to read up on all the toxic dangers you must be aware of so that one stays healthy. Here are some links that will help you with that and may also answer some of your zinc, etc. questions.

Dont risk you birds health by making a cage by yourself. Buy one thats in the mid price range if you’re on a tight budget, cause you dont want a cheap cage.A cheap cage could be as bad as the one you make yopurself.
