My 18-year-old blue-crowned conure parrot just laid an egg – first one of her life. What should I do?

She’s the only parrot we have, so obviously it wasn’t fertilized. Do I need to take any special measures to care for her? Should I leave the egg in the cage or remove it? I definitely didn’t see this coming after all these years.

If there’s a nest it’s OK to leave it for a couple weeks, otherwise remove it before it breaks. Female birds of all species lay unfertilized eggs all the time. As long as she has enough calcium it’s fine.
basically make a nest. but first go to a petstore imediately. they will give you everything you need. leave the egg with the mother.
If she is showing interest in the egg, it’s probably best not to remove it as that could stimulate her to lay another egg. If you are worried about it rotting and getting smelly, you could try replacing the egg with a fake one for her to try to hatch. If she isn’t showing any interest at all, you can just remove it. Give her some calcium supplements in her feed.
You can buy false eggs from a specialty bird store. Or you can leave the egg where it is. Be careful about removing the egg if she is interested in it. It could cause great stress on her. After a while of sitting on it she will loose interest and then it can be removed. If she continues to lay eggs be cautious of the term being egg bound. It is when the egg gets stuck in her, her bum will be swollen and it may cause infection. A vet and only a vet should remove an egg that is bound. It will have to be an avian vet. As for her diet, make sure she is getting at least 50% pellet food for proper vitimans and minerals. Give her a cuttle bone for her calcium needs. Plenty of sunshine for vitimans a & d. Females do lay eggs on their own so yes it’s a dud. Laying eggs sucks a lot out of a female so make sure her diet is well rounded. Dark green veggeis are good for a lot of nutrients too……(no avacado or chocolates)
