what you need first off is a pattern to get you started. heres a free one that you can start out with. http://cache.lionbrand.com/patterns/60539.html?noImages=
you need a super bulky weight yarn and how much depends on how big your dog is, this will cost you about $4 depending on where you go for the yarn
next you need the size needles, this pattern says size 13. if you buy aluminum needles they will cost about $3 again depending on where you go.
a pair of scissors this will cost you about $2 depending where you go or if you need to buy a pair
a tape measure you can get a tape measure for $1
a set of stitch markers for about $2
a large eye blunt needle to weave in ends. $2 for a set of 2 or 3
your pooch to get the measurement so that the sweater fits. $0 since i assume that you already have one. LOL!
so total itll cost you about $14 it may cost a little more or less. the place that i get all of my knitting life items would be hobby lobby. heres a link on where one is if you dont know.

dont forget have fun!
lets see you need
knitting needles maybe size 9 for a dog( also good size for a scarf too) and yarn nothing else really but since you want it to be a sweater you could use loop needles [i think that is what they are called] …shouldnt cost more than $20-$30 depending on what type of yarn you get….
go ask your local craft store if you need help knitting they usualy have classes this time of the year
It not that expensive, It probabily about $10-$15 or less. The yard is every cheap, but the thing to knit is about $4. You can find those thing in a lots of store; Wal-Mart, Ross, Target, and other.Hope this help u.
The first *must* is find a pattern you want to knit, preferably one marked Easy if you don’t know how to knit yet. Then look at the materials list, minimally you will need one set of knitting needles, the appropriate amount of yarn, and probably some stitch markers.
Next, hunt for inexpensive knitting needles. You might want to try thrift stores run by churches or senior centers, but Salvation Army, Good Will, and Catholic Charity shops ofent have knitting needles in a container on the counter by the register, too. Ask. Make sure you get two needles the same size (and manufacturer if the end cap indicates it, different manufacturers may not make their needles exactly the same size as someone else). Check these shops for yarn, too, while you’re at it. They often get yarn from people cleaning out their parents or granparents homes.
For stitch markers, use some plastic coated twist ties left over from loaves of bread, cheap, sturdy, and reasonably available <G>. Other things are the plastic tabs from baked goods bags, or 4 inch pieces of other yarn or string that go around the needle with a larks head knot. Just don’t knit the yarn into the pattern.
While you might need a yarn needle (a blunt tapestry needle), too, these are fairly cheap and might also be found in thrift shops, but if you have to, they can be found in craft stores. A pencil and a sheet of paper to keep track of where you are are about all you need elsewise. All told you might be able to get away with your supplies from these sources for under $10. Can you go crazy at a yarn shop and spend a hundred bucks for this? Sure, but it can be done this way even more cheaply than at an arts and crafts shop.
a good book to teach you how to knit, and has lots of cute patterns it is Stitch and B****(rhymes w/ stitch)….i think it even has a pattern for a dog sweater.
i learned how to knit w/ this book and the instructions are very clear and easy to follow. it teaches all the basics like casting on, knitting, purling, and binding off. plus simple patterns
