I KNOW its wrong!!! but plz help ;]?

Today me and my bestfriend went fishing with a net at a nereby stream just for the fun of it.
The people who work at the place said it was just fine to take them home, so we did.
Since its only a couple tiny ones….

I wana really keep them as pets, but I was wondering if I can use a regular fish bowl, and fish food
My mom said they are going to die, but they look just fine

I know it was wrong to take them from their natural habitat…so DONT tell me!!! I KNOW
I just wana care for them…
can I use regular fish supplies from a petstore???
they kinda look like this mosquitofish:

Not necessarily wrong – there is no real difference between a small fish caught in a local stream and one netted out of some foreign stream up in the top of the Amazon (Except your local ones are less likely to be endangered)

BUT – they will require a normal filtered and cycled tank, same as any other fish. The stream where you got them is running water, it gets contrinous fresh water and the movement of the streams flow exchanges oxygen into the water and bacteria / plants naturally process waste. So in a tank we need to replicate the same things with a filter and water changes.

Apart from that, you need to ID what they actually are, but it’s quite possible they are mosquito fish, or some other aquarium species that just happens to be living wild. We have guppies and Mollies living wild in some geothermal streams here in NZ. They are just aquarium fish that have been (illegally) released by well meaning but misguided people and have bred back to the original dull coloured wild form.

Normal tropical fish flakes are fine for feeding most minnows and live bearers.

obviously you don’t realize it’s wrong.
    you should put them back.
how would you like it if someone kidnapped you from your home and forced you to live in a fish bowl?

and i’m pretty sure if you found them in a stream they’re just premature fish that will get MUCH bigger. and way to big for a fish bowl.
though, no fish should ever be subjected to a bowl.

thumbs down me all you want, but you know it’s true.
i feel sorry for those fish, they’re going to die.

for the most part yess. add some extra logs and such to remind them of home.

i have done the same thing before….
but, you need a powerful filter system
the water needs to be moving some how
(because they are used to moveing water)
so get air stones tubing and a pump
normal is food would be ok i think but
try sinking granuals first they like a good chase

ok, so when I was too young to know it was wrong I did this too. I tried regular food but since they are from thier natural habitat they probably are used to live food. I would try raising (or buying) live brine shrimp. You can try fish food but I don’t know that the fish will know it is food. It’s worth a try though. I think other than that regular tank supplies should work. I did this at my grandmothers with my cousin and my cousin lived down there so she was able to care for it when I left but before I left we decided to release the fish. If it works for you great, but if they don’t eat and stuff then please return them.

I would go to or call my local pet store and ask. They will know best….but your mom is probably right….as moms usually know best. Good luck!

Well, I would not say it is wrong. All you ppl who are saying it is wrong…are wrong. Do you not know the sheer numbers of fish that are caught wild to become aquarium fish every year????

Ok, throw out the bowl and get a tank. 10 gallons preferrably. Feed live foods that can be purchased at a pet store and make sure that you have a good filter and heater. Good luck!=)
