I have a Quaker parrot and a Cockatiel who have been sharing a cage for a Year, should I separate them?

The Cockatiel only has one leg (A rat bit the other one off along time ago when we were away it was flying and got stuck on the rat cage) and the Quaker ignores it mostly, but the Cockatiel is not able to get out of the cage and held very often because the Quaker bullies it if it tries to be social.

Separate them! That poor cockatiel must be miserable, being kept away from the rest of its flock by its own cagemate! Plus the quaker’s beak is big enough compared to the cockatiel that some serious damage could be done if the quaker was in a bad enough mood, and with only one leg, the cockatiel might have a harder time defending itself, and cockatiels aren’t exactly known for being good at self-defense to begin with.

that’s sad about your birds leg.that is so sad.i have just 1 Cockatiel who just had minor surgery yesterday.on her head.ouch poor little bird.yes maybe you should separate them for now.so your cockatiel can eat/drink etc.move around and feel safe.if your Quaker is picking on the Cockatiel.yes i would keep them in separate cages.

Cockatiels are very sociable.and Lovable birds.

    Good Luck!

yes, separate them. im not bird expert and im only 16 but i have had birds my whole life. when i was little we had two cockatiels and neither one would ever let me hold them. a couple years ago (maybe 5) one of the cockatiels died because of old age and the other one immediately came out to me, let me hold him, pet him, and everything. im not sure why, but he turned super friendly. now, both of the cockatiels passed away because of old age and now my mom has a quaker. he will NEVER come to me and he bites everyone except for my mom. i went to petsmart and they said they are one person birds. and judging by how spoiled and babyish my moms quaker acts, i can definitely see how he might be bullying the other. at least try it out for a couple of days.

Looks like you’re gonna be unsuccessful with your attempts for a ‘Quakerteil."

Most definitely separate the two bird into two different cages. You don’t want the quaker to one day finish off the job of what the rat did to your cockatiel…do you?
