How much on average does it cost to have a dog per month?

I’m getting a shitzu puppy in a few weeks and I was just wondering how much on average it would cost per month to take care of one.

How much would it cost for food, supplies, shots, etc?
Thank you!!

A big bag of food to last about a month like $25-35. Puppy vaccines could run around $150, for first shots and boosters. To get a pet spayed or neutered can cost anywhere from $50-1,000 depending on where you go. If you want to crate train it can cost anywhere from $50-250. Shitzu’s also need to be groomed regularly so that they don’t get mats, get hair into their eyes, or have waste caked to them. Then you factor in whether or not your pet might get sick because that has an endless range of prices based on treatment. It’s definitely not cheap to own a pet.

It really depends on what kind of food & supplies you buy them. It could be anywhere from $30-$150 a month depending on what brands you buy, etc.

Not much per month depending on the size of the dog and how much it eats. $10 to $16 a month for food. It will cost about $200 a year in shots and heart gueard and flea treatments.

I buy a thing of treats every month, a bag of dog food, and a toy or two. Also keep in mind that while a dog is growing it will need new collars pretty often to grow with the dog. Yours will need to be groomed I don’t know how often or how much that will be but keep that in mind too. On average I spend about $75 a month on my dog.

Shots: $200 per year for shots and office visit; so divide by 12
Supplies: $ the sky is the limits for your precious bundle but even modestly you may spend $15/mo
Food: $25-100 per month depending on the brand and food
    License: $10 / yr
    Spay/Neuter: $150 one time

a lot a factors go in to this like,

The dogs health is the biggest one, vet bill are not something you can est.
shots are anywhere from free to 35.00 but thats not mthly. supplies will run you about 50-100 unless you are getting a kennel for your puppy they are an extra 30-80.
Food will only run you about 20.00 a mth if that.
then extra for treats and toys.

you can’t really average it on a month to month basis! some months you have shots and vet (big expense) other months you have only food and maybe toys or shampoo’s (around $30) so I would average about $8oo.oo to $1ooo.ooo a year!!! If you take care of it right.

That all depends on where you live and what quality you are purchasing. Basic toys are usually a couple of bucks each, food for a small dog can run around $30 per month for a decent quality.

Vet bills are something else – vets can set their own fees, and will charge whatever is the going rate for the area they are in. The good news is typically you only need a vet once a year, so the cost should be minimal.

The ongoing flea and heartworm medications run on average $30 per month for both of them.

Also, when you get the dog, enroll in a puppy kindergarten class to help with common puppy issues such as housebreaking and chewing, to get a good start at the basic obedience commands, and the most important, to get the dog properly socialized. These usually run around $100 for an 8 week class.

Bearing in mind we live in NYC, I reckon we spend an average of $200 per month on our dog. This includes vet insurance, but what we owe for our portion of the vet bills are not included.

We spent $1000 in the first month just getting the basic supplies, vaccinations, classes…

it works out about £1 a day with our collie cross for dog food and biscuits but that is not including things that may happen like vets bills in England the shots at the start are £56 then your yearly shot about £25 that is not including any treats you may want to give them. then you will need a bed a lead and collar toys. it soon mounts up hope this helps

It costs me about $80.00 a month for food, 2 dogs. I feed raw, do the premade mixes which aren’t cheap and dehydrated treats; annual vet checkup with blood work (titers) and fecal testing $200.00, I don’t do booster shots; rabies shots every 3 years at $65.00 each; I give Heartgard at $78.00 (I think that’s right) for 12 tablets and Frontline at $35.00. Any other vet visits in between are additional. All my costs are 2xs which I’ve allowed for.
