Naomi B, I’ve got a Missouri pet supply store that has lots of bargains on pet supplies. Try dropping in on a pet supply store in New York and talk to the sales staff. http://www.petsupplieshelp.com/New-York-Pet-Supply-Stores.html Nearly all pet supply store employees are glad to answer any questions.

A Yorkie from a GOOD breeder will cost about $2000 (give or take), and yorkie from a shelter will cost around $150-$200. Never buy a yorkie from a backyard breeder or a pet store, these dogs are often riddled with health problems and will cost you a lot of money. Heres a list of supplies you will need:

    Crate- around $100
    Food- around $30 a week
Toys- depending on the kind, but about $20 on toys is all you will need
    Bowls- around $8 each
    Leash and Collar- Around $30
    Worming Tablets- around $10
Flea Control/Shampoo- around $10- for spot on flea treatments it will cost around $60 for 6 months protection for fleas or 3 months protection for ticks
Medical Costs- Allow about $200 to cover the 9 and 12 week injections, then after that its about $60 a year for the C5 injection
Training- Puppy school is usually around $50 for 8 weeks, but it depends on the individual trainer :)
    Treats- around $8

hmmm thats all I can think of right now :) If I think of anything else I’ll add it :)

    Hi,
Well, I don’t know where the other person lives that answered your question but I am thinking California….Her prices are a bit high. All prices depend on where you live. Here in Minnesota a Yorkie from a good breeder will cost about $800. PLEASE don’t buy a dog from a pet store or for that matter a breeder. Your local shelters have SO MANY dogs in need of homes right now. Most all pet stores get their dogs from puppy mills–and NO THEY WON’T ADMIT IT.
    You may want :
    1) a crate ….Maybe $70 or less depending what store you get it at. ALL pet stores will be more expensive for any product.
    2) Grooming for a Yorkie is a must from a professional groomer roughly every 8 weeks or so…..$35–$50
    3) I’ve gotten most of my dog clothes and bowls, as well as bedding (blankets, pillows etc for the pups) from a thrift store. So a couple of dollars here or there. All things are in EXCELLENT condition. Glass bowls are a must, as they clean easier and don’t hold bacteria like rubber or metal.
    4) You will have to call a local vet to find out prices of shots, worming, spaying/neutering, microchip (a MUST for Yorkies). They are the experts in that field
    5) You can use a baby shampoo if you must give your pup a bath in between grooming…..so, $2-$3
    6) You can find nice leash and collar sets at your local Dollar Store. If you want something with more "Bling" then you will pay more "Cha-ching" elsewhere. LOL
    7) Puppy kindergarten maybe $45-$60 for a 6 or 8 week series of obedience classes. Start them early! they can begin to train as early as 6 weeks… :-)
    8) Toys ….you may want, 1 squeeky toy, 1 chew toy, 1 plush toy, depending what you get, less than $20. Search the internet for great "homemade" toys. BUT your time playing with your pup will be the best. YOU are their "human toy".
    9) Food…..Up here for an 8 or 10 lb bag of Solid Gold "Just A Wee Bit" dog food, top of the line, excellent dog food….here it costs between $10 & $15. and should last your Yorkie about 2 weeks. Buy the BEST food you can afford (like the one I mentioned) make sure it is corn and grain free, you will feed less of it, and your pup will produce less stool because most of the nutrients are being utilized, and not passing thru as waste. It’s like feeding him a good balanced meal instead of White castle or candy bars. This will mean less health problems and trips to the vet as your pup grows. :-)
Those are the basics to get you started. Everything else is just extra.
Everything depends on where you live and where you decide to shop. Again, Dollar Stores, and Thrift shops are the best places to go first. Walmart has a great pet department and you can find lots of toys and things there at a lower price than a pet store.
Again, try petfinder.com, or your local shelter for adopting your Yorkie or a new best friend. It will mean the world to a scared, homeless pup. Remember:
LOVE is free. Having your new best friend is PRICELESS.
