How do you get the hard white stuff off aquariums, their hoods, and filters?

I’ve tried bleach, hot water, and an aquarium scubber. I’ve also tried toothbrushes.

It’s either salt or lime deposits from your water. Vinegar will loosen lime scale and a lot of scrubbing will help but it’s almost impossible to entirely remove it. Bleach won’t work and is a bad idea for your tank. You really have to make sure it has been rinsed off.

    scrub! hard.

That is a lime deposit. Start using store bought water to lessen the problem. Scrap it off with a razor blade. Don’t neglect this, or it will build up beyond repare and compromise your tank.

Try using a baking soda & vinegar combo to clean your aquarium. It’s a "green" alternative to commercial chemicals. But, be prepared…the mixture bubbles up when combined!

make a paste of table salt and warm water, use a brush and scrup it off, rinse, this is really the only safe thing to use and it works great !

Mixing baking soda and vinegar will result in carbon dioxide and sodium acetate– sodium acetate will actually ADD to the lime scale! The best way to get rid of it is simply using a moist paper towel or sponge (that was never in contact with cleaning agents). Vinegar alone would work, but warm water alone will dissolve it (what you’re seeing is calcium and magensium bicarbonate, and other hardening constituents, all of which are soluble).
