Getting a new dog, how much beginning supplies?

I am getting a 4.0lbs 5.5 year old yorkie poo from the humane society. How much should I plan on spending when i need to buy, food, food dishes, a bed, collar, leash, toys, treats, poo poo bags, and any other things that ididnt think of that I'll need to get him settled in. I plan on going to petsmart or petco for these items. Can anyone ball park what they spent on getting their new dog started? Thanks in advance!!

I recently got a Havanese puppy (small and a lot like a Yorkie as far as their needs), so here's what I spent:
High quality food $16 for a 6.5 lb bag (Innova brand)
Food and Water dishes $0.89 each (got these at Target, and that was the regular price!)
    Collar: $6
    Leash $7.50
    bed $30
    crate $20
exercise pen $30 (I keep it inside and use it when I am away. Plenty of space for his bed, toys, and water dish)
treats $2 (Old Mother Hubbard brand)
Poo Poo bags: reused grocery bags, $0
toothbrush/paste $5 (this is especially important for Yorkies as they are prone to dental diseases)
    nail clippers $2
    hairbrush $3
    dog shampoo $11
Toys (balls, hard plastic, stuffed, rope, etc) $30 all together
Frontline Plus (for fleas and ticks) $40
**Total start-up cost: about $210 (not including the dog himself)

You will also have to factor in vet costs, but this varies widly depending on where you live and how healthy the dog is. At my vet it is about $25 for a check up in San Diego, CA.

***Go to http://www.petedge.com/home.jsp they have everything you need for a lot cheaper than you will find it at most stores, including Target and Walmart, and they are the exact same brands and quality that you would find in any pet store. Items usually arrive at your house in less than a week! This is where I go the majority of my supplies.***

    Hi,

About a year ago I bought a maltese which is in the same range of your Yorkie poo, and that stuff can take around $300-500. Now days dogs aren't cheap. I don't if the the humane society your buying from gave your dog its 3 rounds of shots yet but all together those can be up $1,000. Check out this page- http://www.paw-rescue.org/dog_guide.php

I hope I answered your question,

    Well…..
Good, High Quality food-40 to 60 dollars
    dishes 10-30 dollars
    bed 20-100 dollars
    collar 8-20 on up
toys- usally 3 dollars on up a peice
    leash- 10 on up
    treats 5 on up
poo bags- reuse the plastic bags from the store
if you plan on crating him when your away 50 on up
shampoo, grooming supplies, clippers ect… unless you plan on taking him to a groomer, I think for our first dog we spent somewhere around 500 dollars to get him started, granted he is a big dog but you probably want to plan on 2 to 300 dollars

Buy the supplies at Wal-mart! You are going to spend a fortune if you buy all of that stuff at Petsmart or Petco.

I don't like shopping at walmart, but they have cheap dog stuff! Just don't buy any Hartz products.

    Hi

We recently bought a puppy for $350 (Australian $) and spent a total of $1,200 all up. That included many things such as toys, 2 konks, teething bone, blankets, bowls, shampoo, brush, food/treats for training, collar and 2 leads with poop bags, tablets, flea treatments, vet bills and a carry cage. This also includes a large pen we made to keep him safe & contained at night or anytime while we were out and a custom made double insulated two roomed dog house.
To save money first up, use dishes for his food/water that you have but never use. If you can sew or know someone that can then you can make your own blankets and doggy coats for them. At first we used (and still do because he comes in at night) a box cut to size for his bed. An old shirt/blanket/sheet that has your smell on it can be used as his blanket. Toys are easy, tennis balls, a piece of material from an old track suit top/pants with a knot in it makes for a wonderful chew toy or tug toy. I have a piece of old t/shirt tied to a pole that puppy plays with.
So long as you have food, water, collar & lead, somewhere for him to lay on and your love, then that is all he needs.
    Enjoy your new friend!
