Any tank requires routine maintenance to keep the inhabitants healthy. There are no shortcuts to fish keeping.

Also, a 2.5 gallon filtered tank is entirely inappropriate for even a single goldfish. It seems you have more than one goldfish! This is exactly why you are overwhelmed with tank cleaning. You will never have a clean tank with so much overstock. A single common (feeder type) goldfish needs at least a 55 gallon tank with an excellent filter. These fish can get to be over 2 feet long!! If you have 2 or more of these single tail common goldfish, you’ll need to get these into a pond or a very, very large tank (150 gallons or more). These fish are best suited for pond.

If your goldfish are the "fancy" double tailed variety, you need a tank containing 10 gallons of water per fish!! This tank must also be heavily filtered.

Bottom line, your 2.5 gallon tank is way too small for even a single goldfish. If you cannot get a suitable tank for them, give them away to someone who can properly care for them.

Your 2.5 gallon filtered tank is the perfect size for a single male Betta fish.

    nope
thats what having pets are about…nothing but a pet rock is hassle free
you need to monitor the levels of ammonia, nitrates and pH
you will also need to change the charcoal in your filter if it has it

I have a 55 gallon fresh water tank and i love it, i have had it for 9 years and the only time ive had to do anything to it was when i moved and had to empty it and set it back up. (not counting human error or course ie: overfeeding, too much sunlight etc.)
I have always had one plecostimus algea eater in it and a few snails. otherwise it has varied from goldfish to tetras to guppies to an oscar….ive had it all lol and ive never had to do anything to it to amount to anything. nothing is absolutely care free.
the smaller tanks all seem to need alot of upkeep for some reason.

oh…and the tank itself usually runs around 200 dollars.

my fish live long healthy lives in this tank, a good filtration system goes a long way. i wont be changing anything since this has worked very well for me for 9 YEARS. i never said it takes NO cleaning i said there are times you will have to clean it due to human error. i believe the last line of my original post was quote: "nothing is absolutely care free."

my water is perfectly clear and you can stick any test kit in it you want to with very good results.

Not ever, ever cleaning it,.. but to NOT AS OFTEN clean the tank, you can get snails.
There are specific snails that only eat the algae and scummy stuff on aquarium glass,.. cheap too, like 1-2 bucks each or less.

You will need an algae eater (snail etc…) and keep it out of direct sunlight, otherwise, it will grow algae. The algae eaters wont cost you anymore than a couple of bucks each.

You’ll always have to do water changes, that’s just part of having a fish tank. But if you have live plants in the tank, they will feed off of the nitrates in the water so you will not have to clean it out as often. You can not get a pleco for that size tank because they get 18+ inches, snails are ok, but if they start to breed you will have a tank overflowing with snails. your best bet would be to get live plants.

    Hi oijewr3,
Since your fish tank is not as big, you wont have to worry about cleaning. You should first have these fish to keep you tank clean
    -algae eater
    -snails
    -catfish
    -loaches
    -lepord lungfish
    -some plants too
-and fish that dont poo as much
Fishes you should not get are gold fish because they really mess up your fish tank. They’ll eat alot of food and poo alot too. Soi suggest you dont get a gold fish. Get fishes like neon tetras, and angel fishes. Some ghost shrimps would also help you clean the uneaten food that fell to the bottom. For example flake food, which pollutes tanks alot.

You will always have to do some cleaning on that small of an aquarium. Algae will always appear and if you have fish that ate all the algae they would soon starve. Sooner or later will will have to do some. Even if its to remove the water line at the top of the tank and clean the glass. But as for the gravel and rock in a tank you can let them grow algae and bacteria that will cause an echosystem that will maintain itself. Thats what reef tanks are all about. But reguardless you will always have some maintaince of some kind. A big tank with only a few fish will allow you to go longer between cleanings. So a 10 gal tank and filter with your fish in it will go 3 to 4 weeks with out cleaning it. Add in some algae eaters and they will help keep things cleaner but at some point you will have to clean. And I’m not talking about avoiding water changes. You should always do that when needed.

    oh my god…

    1) FILTERS DO NOT LET YOU NEVER CLEAN YOUR TANK! YOU MUST AND I MEAN MUST DO PARTIAL WATER CHANGES, OR YOUR FISH WILL DIE!
    2) GOLDFISH GET TO BE A FOOT LONG! A 2.5 GALLON TANK ISNT EVEN SUITIBLE FOR A BETTA!

    3) to answer your actual question, the only way to keep that tank clean with no work is to have no fish in it. now go return your goldfish, get a bigger tank, and do some research, before things start dieing. I’m sorry i spazzed out, but your poor fish are doomed unless you do something. contact me if you need any help. good luck.
