anacharis/ elodea?

I have one for my goldfish bowl to supply oxygen… or whatever the fish need underwater
the person at the pet store said it wouldn’t need an air pump/ filter as long as I changed the water.
one of my fish died, so I got 3 new ones…..
They began to attack the anacharis and now all the leaves are on the bottom of the tank.
If I leave it there, will it still supply the water with air?
how do I prevent my goldfish from doing that?
oh yeah, um each of my goldfish are about 1 inch long.
I have 4 and keep them in a glass bowl that is approximately 1.5 quarts.
is it okay?
is there any other cheap method to supply the tank with needed air?
thanks :)

I’m going to skip past all the questions because there is one major thing that makes them completely irrelevant: you have Goldfish in a bowl. Common Goldfish (the 13 cent kind from fairs) should reach well over a foot as adults and live more than 15 years. When kept in bowls, they are lucky to live a few months.

Bowls do not offer a large surface area for bacteria to colonize, so the fish just waste away in their own waste (ammonia), which is highly toxic and can kill fish in very small concentrations. Also, the small surface space allows very little gas exchange to occur, meaning the fish are essentially suffocating. Do NOT keep any live fish in a bowl if you care for it to live.

With the new information you received as far as size, you probably realize that you’ll need a bigger tank, however, unless you can somehow upgrade from a bowl to a several hundred gallon tank, it would be best to just return the Goldfish to the store, get a 2.5 gallon tank and a Betta.

    Original questions:

The leaves at the bottom of the tank will no longer provide oxygen– they will sit there and rot, adding to the ammonia levels produced by the very messy Goldfish.

Goldfish are voracious herbivores, so not much will keep them from eating Anacharis. Some plants, like Hornwort, Cirinum species (Onion plants), Anubias, most Lilies (Nymphaea species), Java Fern, and Java Moss will work, but Anacharis will get shredded continuously.

Regardless of whether or not you can get dissolved oxygen to them, a bowl is inadequate.

There are certain plants that goldfish will not eat and can be researched on the Internet or ask the person at the pet store. Get those leaves on the bottom out asap they will start to break down and create ammonia and that is the last thing you want in a bowl. i really recommend you get a tank for them but its you choice.

That’s way too many fish for such a small container. They need to be in a tank of 20+ gallons, and the more you can oxygenate the water, the better. Plants, filter, air pump are all going to be very important. Water changes should be done on regular basis. Usually about 20% every two weeks.
